Whimsmoore's Top Ten

Aunt Linda's potrait

You may like classic toys because they remind you of a bygone era … even your own bygone era! … but are you aware of all of the benefits they provide to kids? Here's Whimsmoore's list of Top Ten Reasons Why ...

Classic Toys Are Cool

  1. Parents and grandparents can give their children a glimpse of their
own childhood fun, thereby connecting the family generations.

  2. Classic toys are usually quite simple, requiring no batteries; they use “kid-power”
instead. The child has to use his body to make the toy work and may also need
to practice for mastery. This gives him confidence in his own abilities.

  3. Experience with these toys may give the child a creative idea of making up
      her own toy.

  4. They provide long-lasting value. Unlike fads, classic toys are always “cool,”
don’t often break, and playing with them is likely to be a fond memory
      that’s carried into adulthood.

  5. Handmade classic toys can give the child a sense of the human hands that
shaped them, connecting him to a community of caring, capable people.

  6. Classic toys are often versatile, giving the child a stimulus for imaginative play.

  7. The appeal of classic toys is time-tested. They have proven their play value
      over the years.

  8. They often come in many variations. It’s fun to observe the creative twists
      these toys inspire.

  9. Classic toys are often made of local, natural materials that are not
      inherently expensive.

10. Although classic toys are being made overseas, many are still crafted
right here in the USA … maybe in your own neighborhood!

We at Whimsmoore.com, love classic toys and the benefits they bring. That’s why you’ll find that most of our toys are variations on the classics.

For instance, our latest offering is a “tree” full of silly sock monkeys. Sock monkeys have been around for over a hundred years. Our sock monkeys are made in the traditional way, but one has a contemporary twist; it’s made from pink socks. What a fun updating of an old favorite!

Our Elf Toy of the Month is another example. One classic toy I’d like to highlight in our May Elf Toy of the Month is our May Basket Kit. Children have been making and delivering surprise May Baskets filled with spring flowers to their neighbors’ doors for generations. The practice began to fade in the late 20th century but is still being practiced in various parts of the country today. Our May Basket Kit, with its up-to-date materials, provides an easy way to revive this fun tradition and encourage kids to be on the “giving side” of gifts.

I could go on about the wonderful classic toys Whimsmoore carries. Instead, I challenge you to take a look at our pages and see how many you can spot. Which ones did you play with as a kid? Did you have a play kitchen where you spent hours making up and serving creative “dishes?” Did you and your cousins form a kazoo band? We’d love to hear about the fun you had with these toys. You can email us at auntlinda@whimsmoore.com.

Together, let’s invite our children’s and grandchildren's imaginations out to play!
